Mostly Healthy Smoothie Recipe

Okay, so I know we would all like to get healthier. I’m no exception. As someone who has always struggled with my weight and loves food, I can understand the difficulties that come with trying to find healthy food that tastes good. This smoothie is delicious, almost all natural, and easy!

Ingredients:

  • 1 frozen banana (or a lukewarm banana and some ice cubes)
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 Tbsp organic cocoa powder (this has 10% of your daily value of iron!)
  • 2 Tbsp ground flax meal
  • 2 cups spinach or kale or 2 scoops spinach or kale powder (I use Nutricost spinach powder)
  • 1 heaping Tbsp all natural, unsweetened peanut butter
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup unflavored, unsweetened almond milk (add more if your smoothie is too thick)
  • 1 Tsp to 1 Tbsp raw, all natural honey

Directions

  • If you are using fresh spinach or kale, blend those first with some almond milk or water, making a puree.
  • Throw all your ingredients in a blender and blend away! I use a Nutri Bullet blender that I got on sale at Marshall’s.
  • Either put it in a Mason Jar and garnish with some cocoa powder if you’re fancy, or drink it straight from the blender carafe if you’re in a hurry.

Why I like this recipe

This is a recipe I have been perfecting since this summer. I like the iron it provides from the spinach, cocoa powder, and flax meal. I find if I don’t get enough iron, I start to get tired and cranky. You also get some calcium from the aforementioned ingredients, plus the protein powder might provide some calcium, depending on the brand. You get a good balance of some fats, carbs, and protein, which give you a good energy boost in the morning. When I drink one of these smoothies, I can sometimes go without lunch. It fills me up that well. Plus, it tastes like a peanut butter – banana – chocolate shake that is also healthy! What could be better?
