Initial Claims

For my blogging class, I have been tasked with writing my second editorial. This editorial must be on a state issue. While the issue I have chosen is not limited to the state of Nebraska, it is currently being discussed in the state of Nebraska.

Main Claim:

The state of Nebraska must pass legislature to protect Native American women.

Supporting Claims

Homicide is the third leading cause of death in Native American women ages 10-24. According to the United States Department of Justice, Native American women are 10 times more likely to be murdered than women of other racial / ethnic groups. Source

If a Native American woman is murdered by a non-Native American person, there is little to nothing anyone can do to investigate or prosecute the murderer. Source

The proposal for LB 154 would allow Nebraska State Patrol to work with the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs on a study that would determine how many Native American women are currently murdered or unaccounted for. Source

The goal of this study, which would be published in 2020, would aim to improve investigative techniques and communications between the tribes and the state of Nebraska. Source
